Tyler Adams Parents: The Story of the Soccer Star’s Blended Family

By William Rodriguez

Tyler Adams is one of the most promising and talented soccer players in the world. He is the captain of the United States men’s national soccer team and a midfielder for Premier League club AFC Bournemouth. He has won several accolades, including the U.S. Soccer Player of the Year award in 2022 and the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. But who are the people behind his success? Who are Tyler Adams’ parents? In this article, we will introduce you to Melissa Russo and Darryl Sullivan, the mother and stepfather who raised Tyler and supported his soccer dreams.

Melissa Russo: A Single Mom Who Sacrificed Everything for Her Son

Melissa Russo is Tyler Adams’ mother and his first and biggest fan. She was born in 1977 and grew up in Wappinger, New York. She was a soccer player herself, playing as a goalkeeper in high school and college. She met Tyler’s biological father, a Black man whose name is unknown, when she was 21 and a recent community college graduate. She gave birth to Tyler on February 14, 1999, when she was 22 and living in her mother’s home. Tyler’s father was not involved in his life, and Melissa raised him as a single mom. She moved to an apartment in Poughkeepsie with Tyler when he was two years old. She worked as a mortgage underwriter and later as a teacher, while also taking part-time classes to earn a bachelor’s degree in sociology. She put off her own education and career goals to provide for Tyler and his soccer passion. She told The Athletic: “He is the perfect role model for me. There was never a time that I went to my mom and she’d say no — she’d find a way to make it happen. It was never anything crazy like skiing in Aspen, but it’d be me wanting to watch a game, or playing soccer with my friends.”

Melissa was Tyler’s first coach, teaching him the basics of soccer when he was five years old. She also drove him to countless practices, games, and tournaments, sometimes covering hundreds of miles a day. When Tyler joined the New York Red Bulls academy, Melissa drove him 75 miles to the team’s New Jersey facility for practice. She also moved with him to Germany when he signed with RB Leipzig in 2019. She has been a constant presence and a source of encouragement and inspiration for Tyler throughout his soccer journey. She told ESPN: “I’m just so proud of him. He’s worked so hard for this. He’s always had a vision and a goal, and he’s never given up on it. He’s always been so focused and determined. He’s an amazing person and an amazing player.”

Darryl Sullivan: A Stepfather Who Became a Father Figure for Tyler

Darryl Sullivan is Tyler Adams’ stepfather and his second biggest fan. He was born in 1975 and grew up in Hopewell Junction, New York. He was a football player in high school and college, playing as a linebacker. He met Melissa Russo when they were both students at John Jay High School in the 90s, but they did not date then. They reconnected and started dating when Tyler was seven years old. Darryl had three sons from a previous relationship: Darryl Jr., Dylan, and Devon. He welcomed Tyler into his family and treated him as his own son. He told The Athletic: “He’s my son. I don’t look at him any differently. I love him to death. He’s a great kid. He’s always been respectful, always been humble. He’s always had a good head on his shoulders.”

Darryl was Tyler’s second coach, helping him improve his soccer skills and his physical fitness. He also supported Tyler’s soccer ambitions and helped him deal with the challenges and pressures of being a professional athlete. He also gave Tyler advice and guidance on life and personal matters. He told ESPN: “I’m always there for him. I always try to give him the best advice I can. I always try to be honest with him. I always try to be supportive of him. He knows he can always count on me. He knows I always have his back.”

Darryl and Melissa got married in 2013, when Tyler was 14 years old. They had a daughter, Chelsey, in 2014. Tyler considers Darryl as his father and his brothers and sister as his siblings. He has a close and loving relationship with his blended family. He told ESPN: “They’re my family. They’re everything to me. They’ve always been there for me. They’ve always supported me. They’ve always made me happy. They’ve always made me feel loved. I love them so much.”

Tyler Adams: A Soccer Star Who Credits His Parents for His Success

Tyler Adams is the third of the five children of Melissa Russo and Darryl Sullivan. He was born on February 14, 1999, in Wappinger, New York. He inherited his parents’ athletic talent and passion for soccer. He played soccer from a young age, joining the Red Bulls Academy in 2012. He turned professional with the New York Red Bulls II in 2015, and joined the New York Red Bulls first team in 2016. He transferred to RB Leipzig in 2019, and then to Leeds United in 2022. He joined AFC Bournemouth in 2023. He has also represented the United States at various youth levels, before making his senior debut in 2017. He has won several honors, including the U.S. Soccer Player of the Year award in 2022 and the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He is widely regarded as one of the best and most versatile midfielders in the world.

Tyler Adams has credited his parents for his soccer success. He has said that they have been his biggest motivators and mentors, and that they have taught him everything he knows about soccer and life.
